How To Do An Owl Pellet Dissection
First you will want to remove the foil wrapping make sure to keep the pellet intact. Next put a small piece of saran wrap on the pan and then weigh the pellet with a pan balance. Now record the weight of the pellet.
Next try to predict the number of small animal skulls you’ll find in the pellet based on the relative weight of the pellet. The number of skulls found will usually range from zero to five.
Dissect your pellet using a bone sorting chart to identify the bones. Make sure you separate the bones from the fur and other debris in the pellet. You’ll be able to identified the hip bones and upper leg bones by their large ball joints.
The scapula or shoulder blade, ribs, vertebrae, foot bones, skull bones, feathers and beaks are also recognizable. Dissect the pellet completely and save all bones. Arrange all the bones from each pellet on a separate 5″ X 8″ index card and then glue into place. Then label the card.
